This post is a companion to our surf lesson series and the Week 1 safety and pop-up video. It’s designed to set you up with the fundamentals before you even paddle out at Kirra Beach. Our corner of the southern Gold Coast is legendary: sitting at the end of the world-class Superbank, but it’s also one of the best places to learn when you’re in the right part of the bay. At Kirra Point Surf School, we combine expert coaching, local knowledge, and a focus on safety so you can build confidence and get that unforgettable feeling of your first stand-up ride.
Building ocean awareness at Kirra
Surfing isn’t just about standing on a board: it’s also about understanding the ocean. Kirra can serve up rolling whitewater for learners one day and pumping barrels the next. In Week 1 of our surf programs, we teach you how to keep your eyes seaward, read incoming sets, and understand the beach’s rips and banks.
One of our recent students, Sarah from Brisbane, said:
“I never realised how much safer I felt once I understood how to spot a rip. The instructors explained it in a way that finally clicked for me. Now I don’t just feel like a learner — I feel like I belong in the water.”
Controlling your board like a local
Our instructors will first teach you how to tame your board. This starts with how to carry your board by the rails, never by the leg rope, and keep it tucked by your side as you move through the shallows. We also teach you to walk and paddle beside each other, not in a line, so if someone loses their grip, there’s no “seven-foot missile” flying at your mate.
James always likes to remind beginners:
“If you control your board, you control your session. The ocean will always do its thing, but if you’re safe and steady with your board, you’ll enjoy every minute.”
Awareness of others
Kirra beach is shared with other learners, advanced surfers, swimmers, and bodyboarders. Week 1 drills into you the golden rule: never paddle directly behind someone. You’ll learn to keep scanning the water, anticipate other surfers’ paths, and adjust early. This awareness is what separates a nervous beginner from a confident surfer who earns respect in the lineup.

Learning how to fall
Falling is part of surfing and doing it right is what keeps you safe. We’ll show you how to fall flat like a belly-flop, protect your head with your arms, and never dive head-first. One of our favourite student stories comes from Jack, a FIFO worker who joined us last season. When Jack stacked it for the first time, he remembered the belly-flop rule. Sure enough, his board bounced right past my head. If he’d dived, it could have been nasty.
Mastering the pop-up
The pop-up is the moment everything comes together. Depending on your flexibility and fitness, we’ll tailor the method to suit you: from a smooth, one-motion pop to a step-by-step rise (and yes, using knees is okay when needed). You’ll practise on the sand first, then in the shallows where the waves do the pushing for you.
We’ll coach you through common mistakes too; like looking down at your feet (where you look is where you go), or bending from the waist like a “pooh man” instead of sinking at the knees.
Why this first week matters
By the end of Week 1, you’ll not only have stood on a surfboard but also gained a real understanding of the ocean environment at Kirra. These foundations are what make every future lesson smoother, safer, and more fun.
As one local dad, who booked a family lesson, put it:
“I thought it would take us weeks to stand up. But by the end of the first session, both kids were riding little waves in. The safety drills gave me confidence to just enjoy the moment.”
Ready to give it a go?
Week 1 is your launchpad. You’ll walk away with practical knowledge, ocean confidence, and that buzz of catching your very first wave at one of Australia’s most iconic beaches. Book your spot at Kirra Point Surf School today and let’s get you standing.
Is Kirra Beach safe for beginner surfers?
Yes. We choose the best teaching zone on the day, close to patrolled areas and away from heavy surf. Kirra’s bay can offer forgiving waves for learners when conditions are right.
Do I need to be fit to join the Week 1 lesson?
Not at all. Our coaches tailor the pace to you. Pop-up methods are adjusted for flexibility and injuries — and you’ll build strength and balance as you go.
How quickly will I be standing up?
Most students stand on their first lesson. By the end of Week 1, you’ll understand your pop-up, how to control your board, and how to ride a wave safely into shore.
What makes Kirra Point Surf School different?
We’re locals. We’ve surfed Kirra our whole lives, and we know every tide and sandbank. Our focus is on safety, fun, and teaching you the skills to keep surfing confidently long after the lesson ends.
What should I bring to my first surf lesson?
Bring swimmers, towel, sunscreen and water. We supply the board, leg rope, and rashie or wetsuit if needed.
